I was born in Taree but lived in Port Macquarie until I was 20. I have 1 older brother and 1 younger sister. We lived only 2km from the Port Macquarie Golf Course, so I started playing when I was 10. I played golf and tennis until i was 14, then realised that to become a professional sportsperson you can only concentrate on 1 sport, so golf it was...
By the age of 16 I was playing of a 0 handicap, representing both the Port Macquarie Golf Club and the Lower North Coast region. I knew what I wanted to do when I left school. Hence there was not much homework being done! At 17, I was selected in the state squad which was a great thrill for a boy from Port Macquarie.
After I finished school, I moved to Sydney where I joined Bonnie Doon Golf Club. I was a member there for one and a half years, playing Division 1 pennants and NSW golf events on weekends. I had a storeman’s job at Harvey Norman to help pay the bills. This is when I realised the best way to chase my dream was to do a Golf Professional Traineeship. In 1996, I moved back to Port Macquarie to start under the watchful eyes of Head Professional, Peter Bennett. I had many trainee wins and passed all exams with flying colours. I found the job easy, because I love what I do and it didn’t seem like work. The highlight of my three year traineeship was being selected in an Elite squad, comprising the top 10 trainees in Australia. We trained at the AIS in Melbourne where we were fortunate to work with some of Australia’s (the worlds) best coaches.
In 1999 I became a full PGA (Professional Golf Association) member. I was living the dream, playing Professional Golf.
